In today’s fast-paced world, technology is reshaping how we live and work. To guide our teams through these digital changes, we need to adapt. But what does it take to be a leader in this digital age? And how do we navigate these tech advancements effectively?
Here are my key insights on digital leadership and some essential survival tips for the modern era.
When I first entered the tech industry, leadership was predominantly about authority and tenure. The longest-serving employees were often deemed the most valuable, and their voices carried the most weight. I remember a time when I had a ground-breaking idea that I was excited to share. However, despite my enthusiasm, it felt like my ideas were brushed aside because I was considered “too young” and my concepts were deemed too far-fetched.
I was left wondering if I had failed to articulate my vision effectively or if it was simply that others couldn’t see the potential I saw. This experience, although frustrating, became a pivotal moment in my career. It fuelled my determination to create a leadership style that values every voice, fosters innovation, and encourages open dialogue, ensuring that no idea goes unheard. Now, 15 years later, as leadership evolves to prioritise creativity, empathy, and collaboration, I am driven by the opportunity to empower others and to create an environment where fresh ideas can thrive.
Imagine leading a team through a digital revolution where technology evolves faster than ever before. How would you adapt your leadership style to not just survive but thrive in this dynamic environment?
In order to thrive in an ever-evolving tech landscape, I embraced the challenge of growth. I pursued opportunities to expand my understanding of leadership, both through hands-on experience and formal education.
This journey led me to achieve my Chartered Chief Information Officer (C-CIO) and Certified IT Business Professional credentials. I completed my MBA and am now pursuing a Doctorate in Digital Transformation (DPhil Digital Transformation). Each step has been driven by my commitment to adapt and learn continuously, blending real-world insights with academic knowledge to become a more effective leader.
In my journey of trying to obtain an edge in leadership through hands-on and formal education, do you want to know what I learned? Firstly, be a nice person, help, teach, and most importantly, constantly aim to make the people in your charge better than you. But, there’s more, here’s what else I have learnt along this journey of digital leadership:
