As Women’s Month concludes, we’re honoured to spotlight the incredible journey of Rose Beckett, a true trailblazer in the tech world. Her story is one of resilience, passion, and unwavering determination—qualities that have propelled her to become a pioneer in her field.
Rose joined BET Software in July 2021 as a Software Delivery Lead, bringing a wealth of experience and a bold vision for the future. But her journey started long before that, with a dream to defy expectations in a male-dominated field.
From the outset, Rose stood out. In her first year of studying electrical engineering, she was one of only three women in a class of 220 students. The environment was challenging, but Rose was determined not just to survive but to thrive. She was the only one of the original women to complete the course, emerging as a top student in a field where many expected her to falter.
“I pursued electrical engineering driven by my love for Math and Science, inspired by my dad who explained how things like TVs and phones work.”
Being a woman in a predominantly male class meant Rose had to constantly prove her worth. Yet, she never let the pressure dim her spirit. Instead, she embraced it, propelling herself further and to show that women not only belong in tech but can excel and lead in it.
Rose’s belief in equality and the power of women is not just a philosophy; it’s a way of life. She has always believed that women can do anything they set their minds to and lives by this belief every day. Her advice to young women in tech?
“Be honest, don’t pretend to be something you aren’t, and never be afraid to ask questions.”
Rose’s determination and strength are evident whether she’s delivering software solutions or running the Comrades Marathon—twice, no less, with one of those runs happening just a year after giving birth to her son.
Born and raised in Johannesburg, Rose’s move to Durban to join BET Software marked another chapter in her remarkable journey. It was a leap of faith, leaving behind everything familiar to embrace new opportunities and challenges. For Rose, it was a chance to continue her growth and impact a new environment.
Rose’s love for wine, cricket, rugby, and tennis might suggest a life of leisure, but don’t be fooled. Rose is a force to be reckoned with. Known for her tenacity and willingness to challenge management when she believes in something, Rose is a powerful advocate for women in tech. She knows that progress doesn’t come from staying silent, and she’s never been afraid to speak up.
“As long as you do it respectfully, it’s usually taken well. The worst that can happen is they don’t agree with you.”
