An office manager is like the captain of a ship, ensuring everything runs smoothly, efficiently, and effectively. Whether it’s managing teams or solving problems, the office manager plays a crucial role in maintaining the office’s functionality. For Mengka, being an office manager is just part of her story. When she’s not keeping the office in shape, she’s representing the country on the world stage as a professional touch rugby player. She’s competed twice at the highest level in this sport.
Mengka’s remarkable journey as an office manager and athlete spans over eighteen years. Her story began in 2006 when she caught the eye of her school’s rugby coach during a 100-meter sprint at sports day. The coach suggested she try touch rugby, and Mengka hasn’t looked back since.
Office Manager and sportswoman, Mengka’s dual role requires agility both in the office and on the field. “Being an all-rounder helped my transition between the office and sports. I was always managing time, staying organized, and thinking quickly on my feet,” she says.
Her workday is as demanding as her sports career. “My day as an office manager is literally running around, helping as many people as I can. After work, it’s straight to training—whether running or gym. I train six or seven days a week. This includes gym, league, and field training sessions. I listen to my body though—when I need a break, I take it.” Despite the rigorous schedule, Mengka remains driven, excelling in both her careers.
Mengka’s dedication to touch rugby has taken her to the 2024 Touch Rugby World Cup, where she scored 15 tries, helping her team finish third. “We placed third, and it was an incredible feeling when the whistle blew, and we won that playoff. I dropped to the floor in joy.”
Her success as an office manager and athlete has taught her many valuable lessons. The ability to manage time, stay organized, and remain focused under pressure are essential in both the boardroom and on the field. She balances a 9-to-5 office career while training at a professional level.
The Life of an Office Manager in Sports
Playing at the Touch Rugby World Cup is no small feat and takes immense dedication. Mengka’s first opportunity to represent South Africa came in 2019, where she wore the national colors with pride.
“Being a Touch Bok and representing my country has always been my dream. I cried during the national anthem the first time.”
Beyond the competitive nature of the sport, touch rugby has become a way for Mengka to socialize.
“I love being active—it keeps me fit, but I also enjoy the social aspect. It’s a great way to destress and catch up with friends that I wouldn’t see outside of touch rugby.”
Balancing work and sport isn’t easy, but Mengka proves it can be done with passion, dedication, and a solid time-management approach. Whether it’s managing an office or making game-winning plays on the field, her determination inspires those around her.
Her advice for those thinking about taking up the sport? “Don’t be scared! It’s not a full-contact sport, and it’s a fun way to get fit. We have social clubs for beginners, and you can always reach out to me for more information.”
In the world of office management and professional sports, Mengka’s journey is a testament to perseverance, dedication, and the belief that one can excel in multiple areas of life. Cheers to her accomplishments, both in the office and on the field!
