BET Software Celebrates With Open Air School As It Turns 101

BET Software gifted Open Air School in Durban, one of the oldest special needs schools in the province, with thin clients (computers) to mark the school’s 101st birthday on 9 February, 2022. This celebration also included a tie ceremony to crown the new class of Matriculants.

Open Air School is a special needs school for differently-abled learners, and comes from humble beginnings. It was established under a fig tree which still stands today. Thanks to sponsors like BET Software, over the years the school has been able to educate physically challenged youngsters, most of which come from impoverished backgrounds, and empower them to become independent, well-adjusted people.

BET Software’s continued support, in the form of technical learning aides and IT assisted devices, has given learners – who have all levels of disabilities – the confidence to succeed.

Sithembiso Gabela, Acting Principal at Open Air School, says, “Currently, we have ten computers, but they are old, and no longer work well. We are so fortunate to have this donation from BET Software. Our learners can only thrive with such equipment. Thank you for thinking of us.”

Sethabile Phungule, a Matric learner, says, “Some learners cannot see, nor can they write. They need computers to be able to work. These computers will help them progress.”

BET Software’s General Manager, Michael Collins, says, “The Open Air School is one of our long-standing beneficiaries, and we wish them sustained growth as they usher in another century. BET Software looks forward to once again witnessing incredible Matric results from the class of 2022. The class of 2021 made us proud.”
